The design of learning in the classroom is based upon 3 components:
INSTRUCTION SCIENCE DAILY 5 INQUIRY PROJECT
The 3 components work together to allow as much time as possible for students to apply their understandings.
This is the time the teacher provides students with the base knowledge students need to pursue the standards even deeper. Instruction can be whole class, small group or individual.
INQUIRY PROJECT (LEGACIES OF LEARNING)
This is the opportunity for students to apply their understanding to a question that is personally relevant. The inquiry project is 100% based on their own curiosities and questions. It is an opportunity for students to create and innovate with knowledge being learned in class.
SCIENCE DAILY 5
The Science Daily 5
After students receive teacher instruction or are waiting for teacher instruction, their time in class is spent working through the daily 5 science activities. During each class, students rotate through the activities, spending 15-20 minutes on each activity. After that time, they choose another activity to work on. In a typical class, students are able to move through 2-3 of the science 5 activities.
USING A MODEL TO EXPLAIN A CONCEPT
Students are simply using a variety of science models to try and explain concepts learned in class. Their choice of models could include graphs, drawings, prototypes, mind maps etc...
BUILDING UNIT VOCABULARY
Students are creating a document of new vocabulary. The document includes their own definitions, pictures, links to aspects of their project etc...
CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION
Based on their own curiosity, their own questions, their own inquiry project, students can design and perform mini investigations to further their understandings
COMMUNICATE AN ARGUMENT
This offers students practice with arguing using evidence. Students can answer a question they come up with or a question prompt from the teacher.
RESEARCH BASED ON CURIOSITY
Students are researching their own questions realting to their inquiry project. Students are moving their understanding forward through pursuing their own curiosities.
